Most would know it is Mick Long at Bearcat Base. We supplied an LO team to work along side US and South Vietnam forces. Bearcat was originally a French airfield, later used by the Japanese during World War II. Early in the Vietnam War, the 1st Special Forces established a base there. It was later the base camp for the 9th Infantry Division from January 1967 until the division moved to Đồng Tâm Base Camp near Mỹ Tho in late 1967. We sent Diggers up there for a month or so. Similar ‘postings’ included Baria (Van Kiep) and Xuan Loc to name a few. Hopefully, this will prompt a few comments or an article or two about detachments such as this one. Thanks Gus for the photo and thanks Mick for the ‘now’ version below. There are not too many Old Boys who have not celebrated their 70th. By my reckoning, Graeme Leonard is our youngest Old Boy and he has to wait until April next year before joining the 70s club. Ian Prewett is another youngster and he is set to join the club in March next year. I’m sure there are a few others so happy birthday to all Old Boys still to join the 70s Club. How about sending me a photo on your 70th birthday bash. Happy birthday to all old boys for past and future 70th birthdays.
