4 Field Regiment (SVN) 'Old Boys' Newsletter - September 2024 Edition

Old Boys (and girls) at the Canungra Hotel 17 August 2024. L to R. Jeff Shields, Pete Smith, Pat Long, Susie Bruce, Jacky Shields, Sandy Larter, Mick Long, Pete Bruce, Dave Larter. From Ken (Spud) Murphy via email on 27 June 2024 Hi Peter Thanks for the Newsletter. Mate I'd like to contribute $100 from the 101 Bty 1959 - 61 lot to that fund what is the process? Just recently visited 101 Bty in Darwin with my son Lt. Col. Peter Murphy (Ret.) to present a miniature Queens Banner. The reception we received was nothing short of magnificent. We were hosted by the Battery command team all day. The one disturbing factor was it appears the Artillery is being run by 18yr. olds!! What an incredible group of fine young men we have,,,, although the one question that hung in the air (and wasn't asked) was the weight of cannon balls we used!! Peter, the equipment being used is star wars stuff and as well we now have Gunners manning Zodiacs . Couldn't have been more impressed by the standard of training. I had the opportunity to address a combined group at a dinner that included an embedded U.S. Marine contingent; and advised our members that they were the representatives of a long line of dedicated Gunners and that after being with them for a day I was confident that the future of the Royal Regt. was in secure and professional hands. Keep well mate and be sure to send me the required details Kind Regards Ken {spud) Murphy 7 June 2024 Courtesy of the Department of Defence In a reunion bridging decades of service, Ken Murphy, a distinguished veteran of the 101st Battery, 8th/12th Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery, recently paid his old unit a long overdue visit. 101 Battery recently transitioned from conventional gunnery to become a light littoral battery specialising in reconnaissance. However, the battery remains proud of its legacy.
