Pandanus Park

Project Pandanus is an ever-evolving group who are working to help establish government-supplied wilderness retreats for veterans and their families in every state and territory of Australia. Pandanus Park is the flagship for these wilderness retreats.

Pandanus Park is the vets' wilderness retreat on Cape York Peninsula just south of Princess Charlotte Bay. Wet-season permitting, Pandanus Park is open annually from ANZAC Day to Remembrance Day. There is only one definite event every year: the gathering on 18 August (aka Long Tan Day / Vets Day / Vietnam Veterans Day) when there is an influx of vets and their families from all over

Whether you visit during the quiet times or the August reunion period, you will find lots here to help you make the most of your trip. Your biggest help will be talking with others who've already been there, so please use our Forum freely

Be you a veteran, service or ex-service personnel, or a supporter.

Cockscomb Veterans' Camp

Set in the hills on the southern side of Mt Wheeler. Road access via two-wheel drive and only 30 minutes from Rockhampton.

Cockscomb provides a quiet place away from the city, away from all mod cons, a quiet relaxing place to go when you want to get away and get back to some basic living and quality time.

When staying overnight, you will require your sleeping bag, camp stretcher, swag or hammock if you intend to sleep outside and a torch, matches, food and a rubbish bag, mosquito repellent and your medication. Sign the visitors book, read the standing orders and make a donation to help keep the running costs down.

After staying we ask you to take your rubbish home, replace firewood used, clean up the kitchen and the toilet / shower facilities you may have used before you leave.

Cockscomb has been on the go since July 1997, built by Veterans for Veterans.  Don’t think that because you haven’t had any input into the construction that you don’t have a place in the Cockscomb community.
The Camp is open to ALL Veterans and the more who use it the better the place will be.  Local Veterans or visiting Veterans, you are ALL most welcome to visit, stay over night, and stay for a maximum of 5 days.
$5 PER PERSON PER OVERNIGHT STAY

Please remember to do the right thing, $5 per person per night in the Donations box by the sign in register on the rail camp wagon.

Fixed accommodation is provided in Uc Dai Loi House a Log Cabin and the Andawakey House for overnight stays. Recently added a two berth permanent Van with annex, its own cooking facilities and refrigerator.

Cooking can either be done on an open fire or in the kitchen. A RAYKEN heating system has improved the amenities by providing hot water 24 hours of the day.

Various tables and chairs are available to eat at and there are plenty of log seats to sit on.

There is no electricity, although there is a limited 12V battery source for lighting and a generator. There is no phone and mobile phone access is poor to non-existent.

While water is a available, it is limited. Bulk storage in three 15,900 litre poly tanks and various smaller poly tanks. You are asked to be careful with and conserve water.
